4- August-1997 Supreme Court declares that the Rashtrapati Bhavan press communique of 23/1/1992 on a proposal to confer the Bharat Ratna 'posthumously' on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose "should be treated as cancelled", as the proposal was dropped by the Government in deference to the sentiments expressed by the public and his family members.
6- August-1997 Cabinet approves a proposal to amend the Hindu Marriage Act and the Special Marriage Act, with a view to removing epilepsy as a ground for annulling marriage or for declaring marriage as null and void.
12- August-1997 Bar Council of India debars full-time law teachers from practising as lawyers.
13- August-1997 Supreme Court lays down guidelines and norms for the effective enforcement of the basic human right of gender equality and guarantee against sexual harassment at work places.
