4- January-1966 Indo-Pak Summit, the peace talk between Pakistan and Indian leaders, started at Tashkent. The prominent personalities were Lal Bahadur Shastri and Gen. Ayub Khan.

11- January-1966 Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indian Prime Minister (1964-66), passed away at Tashkent, U.S.S.R. at 1:32, age 61. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously.
11- January-1966 Gulzarilal Nanda was appointed as the acting Prime Minister of India. He held this position till January 24, 1966.
19- January-1966 Indira Gandhi elected leader of the Congress party to succeed the late Lal Bahadur Shastri as the third Prime Minister of India. She pledged to follow path of Non-Alignment in worlds affairs.
24- January-1966 Gulzarilal Nanda stepped down from the position of acting Prime Minister of India. He held his position till January 11, 1966 (Acting).
24- January-1966 Indira Gandhi becomes Prime Minister of India. She continued in this office till March 24, 1977, after winning the General Elections. She became the only second woman in modern history to head a government.
